What is a Wrist Splint?

Thermoplastic wrist splints have a hard structured core that prevents you from moving your wrist. A good wrist splint will apply gentle compression without inhibiting wrist movement. It keeps the wrist in a neutral or resting position. This neutral position minimized the stress and pressure on the joint and tissues. A splint is usually used when someone has a broken or fractured bone or a wrist sprain.

When Do You Wear A Wrist Splint?

Splints, braces and supports are intended to reduce the risk of using a joint or limb in a way that might aggravate an injury. Shapeable wrist splints, like MySplint, can help rest muscles, protect a joint, and prevent compression of tissues such as nerves. Wrist splints should be prescribed by doctors, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and other health professionals.

Everyday activities such as sports, work, and video games can cause wrist pain, especially activities that are long performing or repetitive. Wearing wrist braces and custom-fit wrist splints may provide the support you need to help alleviate wrist pain while performing your daily activities and routines.

Splints and braces are commonly used because of the overuse of the wrist.  Many splints are advertised as being useful for preventing injury or helping with per-existing injuries. If used, they need to be chosen carefully and worn properly. Employees working in stocking or shipping/receiving positions may be at risk. The repetitive motion can strain the wrist.

  • Office Work – Typing on a keyboard and using mouse day after day can cause havoc on your wrists. Adapting ergonomic practices such as proper position at the desk or purchasing ergonomic equipment like a keyboard and mouse can help prevent future problems. Long hours at the computer without proper wrist support may still cause pain.  View an article by the National Center for Biotechnology Information, U.S. National Library of Medicine on Adapting ergonomic practices here.
